Drama from Year 7 to 6th Form

Drama at Doha College is designed as a progressive journey, with pupils developing their skills, confidence and creative voice throughout Secondary before moving into the more specialised demands of GCSE and A Level.

From their first lessons, pupils explore vocal and physical communication, characterisation, improvisation, collaboration, spatial awareness and audience engagement. As they progress, they begin to explore devising from stimuli, scripted performance, subtext, theatrical style, symbolism and directorial intention.

This progression reflects the College’s commitment to Inspiring Minds: encouraging pupils to remain curious, explore new possibilities and discover what they are capable of. Drama provides a particularly powerful space for this, giving pupils the freedom to experiment, make creative choices, learn from feedback and develop their own ideas.

By Year 9, pupils also begin to consider the wider world of theatre production, including lighting, sound, set, costume and props, developing an understanding that successful theatre is created through the combined work of an entire creative ensemble.
 

A Level Drama and Theatre: Developing the Complete Theatre-Maker

For pupils who choose Drama and Theatre at 6th Form, the subject becomes an academically rigorous and creatively challenging course designed to develop confident, independent theatre-makers.

The A Level course brings together performance, directing, devising, textual analysis, theatre practitioners and live theatre evaluation. Pupils are encouraged to take creative risks, develop their own artistic voice and approach their work with the discipline expected in a professional rehearsal environment.

It is this balance between creativity and academic study that makes A Level Drama and Theatre such a distinctive subject. Pupils learn not simply how to perform, but how to interpret texts, analyse theatrical choices, communicate meaning, collaborate effectively and transform ambitious ideas into sophisticated performance work.

A remarkable year for our A Level Drama cohort

The 2026 cohort — Amna, Tunu, Arlo, Orlaidh and Riley — achieved exceptional results, with every pupil gaining either an A or A*.

Their contribution to Drama at Doha College, however, extends well beyond their examination results.

Throughout their time at the College, all five pupils participated in every school production, bringing talent, commitment and professionalism to each performance. They also generously supported younger performers, sharing their experience, offering encouragement and helping to create a culture in which pupils could learn from and inspire one another.

This sense of community is an important part of the DC Difference. Achievement is valued, but so too are the relationships, experiences and opportunities that help pupils grow along the way. The five pupils demonstrated this through their commitment to productions and their willingness to support younger members of the Drama community.

Their next steps are equally exciting. All five members of the cohort are progressing to universities in the UK and Ireland to pursue theatre-related subjects, demonstrating where an A Level in Drama and Theatre at Doha College can lead.
 

Bringing Theatre to Life

Drama at Doha College extends well beyond the classroom.

School productions form an important part of the department's identity, bringing together performers, musicians, designers, technicians and the wider College community. Recent productions have included Our Town, A Night at the Musicals and Pygmalion, each giving pupils the opportunity to work towards ambitious performances while developing the discipline, responsibility and collaboration required to bring a production together.

The department's next major production, The Addams Family, will take to the stage in February, continuing a growing tradition of ambitious, imaginative and professional-standard theatre at Doha College.

Pupils are encouraged to approach productions not simply as participants in a school show, but as young theatre-makers. From performance and characterisation to staging, design and technical execution, every element is developed with purpose and attention to detail.

The result is an experience that goes beyond the final performance. Productions give pupils the opportunity to build friendships, take responsibility, respond to direction, support an ensemble and discover what they can achieve when working towards a shared creative vision.
 

More Than a Performance

The benefits of Drama reach far beyond the stage.

Through making, rehearsing, performing, reflecting and refining, pupils develop skills in communication, collaboration, problem-solving and critical thinking. They learn to respond constructively to feedback, listen to different perspectives and approach challenges with creativity and resilience.

For pupils progressing into 6th Form, these experiences provide a strong foundation for the demands of A Level Drama and Theatre. For those who go on to pursue theatre or other creative disciplines at university, they also provide valuable experience of working independently, creatively and collaboratively.

Drama therefore becomes more than a subject on the timetable. It is a space where pupils can explore ideas, take creative risks, find their voice and develop the confidence to bring ambitious ideas to life.

 

Inspiring the Next Generation of Theatre-Makers

The success of the 2026 A Level Drama and Theatre cohort is a wonderful reflection of what can happen when talent is matched with ambition, expert guidance and a supportive creative community.

Five pupils. Five A or A* results. Five exciting futures in theatre.

But the story of Drama at Doha College is about more than examination results. It is about creating opportunities for pupils to discover, to have the courage to explore ideas and challenge themselves, and to develop the understanding and empathy needed to work meaningfully with others.

From a first improvisation in Year 7 to an A Level performance and, for some, a future in the theatre industry, Drama gives pupils the space to discover what they can achieve and the confidence to take those experiences with them into the wider world.

That is the Doha College Experience: an education that goes beyond the classroom, inspires minds and gives young people the opportunity to develop not only as performers, but as thoughtful, creative and confident individuals.
