Safeguarding, support and welfare - Doha College

Safeguarding, Support and Welfare

Safeguarding is not just a policy – it is a commitment. We fully recognise our responsibility to protect, support, and promote the safety and well-being of every pupil in our care.

Safeguarding and child protection are embedded into every aspect of school life, ensuring they underpin our policies, procedures, and daily practices. Our staff are trained to identify and respond to any concerns promptly, fostering a culture where pupils feel safe, supported, and empowered to speak up.

The welfare of our pupils is at the heart of everything we do.

Child-Centred Safeguarding at Doha College

At Doha College, the well-being and safety of every child are central to everything we do. Our systems, policies, and procedures are built on a strong foundation of Child-Centred Safeguarding – guided by the belief that “it could happen here.”

What is Safeguarding?

Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children — defined as anyone under the age of 18 or under the care of the school — is a fundamental responsibility.

According to Keeping Children Safe in Education (2022), safeguarding is defined as:
“Protecting children from maltreatment; preventing impairment of children’s mental and physical health or development; ensuring that children grow up in circumstances consistent with the provision of safe and effective care; and taking action to enable all children to have the best outcomes.”

This definition underpins our commitment to creating a safe, supportive, and responsive environment for every child in our care.

Wellbeing at Doha College

We believe that true educational success includes the development of resilient, reflective, and emotionally strong individuals.

We aim to support every pupil’s personal growth, ensuring they have the opportunity to be both happy and successful.

To guide this, we promote the Doha College Wellbeing Wheel – a framework that encourages pupils to be:
Safe, Healthy, Achieving, Nurtured, Active, Respected, Responsible, and Included.

These eight principles help our students develop a toolkit for life – equipping them to manage challenges, build confidence, and thrive both in and beyond the classroom.

Our Safeguarding Pledge

Safeguarding is a shared promise — to protect, support, and empower every child in our care.

We pledge that children will:

  • Receive help when they need it, without delay.
  • Be seen by trusted professionals (e.g. teachers, counsellors, or doctors) who will act to keep them safe and reduce further risk.
  • Be listened to seriously, and adults will use their position and authority to help.
  • Be offered private spaces to speak openly — while understanding that if they are in danger, concerns must be shared to protect them.

Doha College staff will:

  • Involve pupils in decisions that affect them and help them understand those decisions.
  • Ensure every child has a named adult they can turn to.
  • Share essential information in the interest of protecting children.
  • Minimise disruption to children’s lives wherever possible.
  • Collaborate across teams to act in the child’s best interest.
  • Be well-trained, confident, and supported in safeguarding practices.
  • Strive to continuously improve our safeguarding processes and impact.
