
Is Your Rubric Facing the Wrong Way?

As teachers, we’ve all been there - you spend hours crafting a detailed rubric, only to watch pupils give it a five-second glance before tucking it into their bags. We know rubrics should help, but how do pupils actually process them in the heat of a task?
A fascinating new study published in Learning and Instruction (2025) used eye-tracking technology and "think-aloud" protocols to look inside the minds of pupils as they used rubrics. Here is what they found - and what it means for your classroom.
The Big Idea: Does Order Matter?
To encourage a strong concept of words, we must expose pupils to hearing and speaking new words before they ever attempt to spell them - a rule that applies from the earliest ages right up to adults. When it comes to learning to spell: first teach the correct spelling, then repeatedly test until the word can be spelt correctly and consistently. Look-cover-write methods, quizzes and low-stakes tests continue to be the strongest way to learn to spell in any language.
The researchers wanted to know if the way we lay out a rubric - specifically whether we put the "Excellence" column first or last - changes how pupils focus. They also tested which type of feedback best helps pupils use a rubric to improve their work.
Excellence First? Yes please
The study found that pupils naturally gravitate towards the highest performance level. However, when "Level 4" (the top marks) was placed in the first column (reading left-to-right), pupils spent significantly more time looking at it.
The Classroom Win: Don't make pupils "hunt" for what success looks like. By putting the highest standards first, you align the rubric with their natural desire to see the goal, helping them fixate on the right details from the start.Visual Attention is the Real Predictor
Interestingly, the study discovered that where pupils looked predicted their performance, but what they said (during the think-aloud) did not. Pupils who spent more time visually scanning the top-tier criteria performed better, even if they didn't explicitly mention those criteria while working. As our Head of Psychology points out, this is called ‘Cognitive Recency Bias’.
The Classroom Win: We often ask pupils to "explain" the rubric to us. While verbalising is good, this research suggests that simply ensuring they have the time and layout to visually "soak in" the high-level descriptors is a powerful driver of quality.
- The "Process" Feedback Power-Up
The study compared four types of feedback after a first attempt at a task:
- No Feedback (Control)
- Product-based: "Your final map is accurate and well-labelled."
- Rubric-based: "You are currently at Level 2 for 'Analysis' because you missed X."
- Process-based: Focusing on the strategies used (e.g. "I noticed you skipped the expert's step of comparing the two climate zones; try that strategy next time"). The Result? While rubric-based feedback helped pupils navigate the rubric better, process-based feedback led to the strongest overall performance gains.
The Classroom Win: To get the most out of your rubric, pair it with feedback that tells the student how to move between the levels, not just where they currently sit.
The Bottom Line
If you want your rubrics to work harder:
- Flip your columns: Put "Grade 9" or "Excellence" on the far left.
- Give "Strategy" Feedback: Tell them how to do the task better, using the rubric as the map for where those strategies will take them.
- Give it Time: Allow pupils dedicated "visual" time with the rubric before they start writing.
How Reliable is This Research?
This research was a rigorous Randomised Controlled Trial (RCT).
- High-Tech Precision: By using eye-trackers, they moved beyond "guessing" what pupils were thinking to seeing exactly where their eyes landed every millisecond.
- Strict Quality Control: They started with 138 participants but excluded data for 58 of them because the eye-tracking wasn't precise enough - this means the 80 they kept provided high-quality data.
- Expert Scoring: Two independent experts marked the pupils' work and agreed almost perfectly (a reliability score of 0.99), ensuring the "performance" results were objective.
How Reliable is This Research?
While the study is robust, keep these points in mind:
- University vs. School: The participants were undergraduats. While the task (landscape analysis) is relevant to the secondary curriculum, 11-18 year olds might process information slightly differently than 19-year-olds.
- Spanish Context: The study was conducted in Spain. While reading patterns are generally similar across Western languages, the specific phrasing and cultural expectations of rubrics can vary.
- Small "n" for Feedback: Once the 80 participants were split into four feedback groups, each group had about 20 people. This is a solid starting point, but larger studies would help confirm these specific feedback effects.
