From Circuit Boards to Entrepreneurship: Bassam Al-Ibrahim’s Journey Beyond Doha College
What begins as curiosity can become a lifelong journey of discovery.
For Doha College alumnus Bassam Al-Ibrahim, a fascination with electronics during his school days developed into an international career spanning telecommunications, leadership, film production and entrepreneurship.
When Bassam Al-Ibrahim left Doha College in 1995, he already had an idea of where his interests lay. What began with a fascination for electronics and telecommunications would take him from Qatar to the UK, from engineering to international leadership, and eventually into the world of entrepreneurship.
Looking back on his journey, Bassam credits much of his approach to learning and personal growth to the foundation he received at Doha College: the encouragement to keep developing, to try new things, to take opportunities and to continually strive to become better.
As Doha College prepares for its annual Year 9 Dragons’ Den competition on 13 and 14 October, Bassam’s story offers an inspiring reminder that entrepreneurial thinking is not simply about starting a business. It is about being curious, having the courage to explore what is possible and being prepared to learn along the way.
A foundation that lasts a lifetime
For Bassam, the Doha College experience began with curiosity. He remembers working on circuit boards at the old College campus and developing a fascination with electronics and telecommunications, an interest that would eventually shape his career.
But it was more than the subject itself that stayed with him.
Throughout his career, Bassam repeatedly returned to the importance of continuing to learn, trying new things and pushing himself beyond what was familiar. From moving abroad to study telecommunications, to taking on international leadership roles, exploring film production and eventually establishing a fintech business, his journey has been shaped by a willingness to evolve.
He reflects on how much of this mindset can be traced back to his time at Doha College: the encouragement to strive, to take the next step and to see how far you can go.
Inspiring our budding entrepreneurs
As our Year 9 pupils prepare for Dragons’ Den, Bassam’s story provides an opportunity to reflect on where curiosity and an idea can lead.
The next generation of entrepreneurs may not yet know where their interests will take them, and they do not need to. What matters is being willing to explore, experiment, learn and have the courage to take the next step.

The Doha College Difference
Bassam’s story is a powerful example of how the Doha College Experience can continue long after pupils leave the College.
Education is not simply about preparing pupils for their next examination or their next stage of study. It is about developing the curiosity to ask questions, the courage to explore unfamiliar opportunities and the ability to learn from the people and experiences around them.
These ideas are reflected in Doha College’s Values of Discovery, Courage and Humanity. Bassam’s journey demonstrates all three: discovering interests that became a career, having the courage to take opportunities and change direction, and learning through the people, teams and communities he encountered along the way.
This is the DC Difference, building foundations that pupils can carry with them into university, their careers and their lives beyond school.
It is also why our relationship with pupils does not end when they graduate. Through Doha College's Alumni Network, our pupils remain part of the wider Doha College community, sharing their experiences and inspiring those who are following in their footsteps.
