It is with great pride that I welcome you to the Primary School at Doha College.

In our Primary phase, we believe that education is about far more than outcomes alone; it is about inspiring a love of learning, cultivating curiosity, and developing a happy and positive mindset that will serve children not only in school, but throughout their lives.

This commitment enables us to adapt our approach to meet the individual needs of each child, ensuring their early years and primary experience are both joyful and memorable. At Doha College, our Primary School follows the National Curriculum for England, delivering a world-class education for children aged 3 to 11, spanning from EYFS to Year 6.

We offer a broad and balanced curriculum that nurtures academic achievement while developing the essential life skills pupils need to thrive — both in school and beyond.

Key Stage 1 (Years 1 and 2)

At Doha College, Key Stage 1 (Years 1 and 2) provides a dynamic and personalised start to the primary years. Pupils learn through Interdisciplinary Learning (IDL) – an innovative and engaging approach rooted in the Early Learning Goals and the National Curriculum for England, supported by rigorous and responsive assessment.

IDL allows children to make meaningful connections across subjects and encourages learner autonomy, as pupils are given the freedom to choose their areas of focus and how they demonstrate their learning. Creativity, curiosity, and challenge are at the heart of this phase.


Core Subjects

Mathematics
Mathematics is delivered through a carefully structured spiral curriculum, where key concepts are revisited and deepened over time to build fluency, confidence and secure understanding. Core strands include number, shape, space and measure, ensuring breadth alongside depth.

In Key Stage 1, pupils develop strong number foundations through counting, place value, addition and subtraction. Multiplication and division are introduced through practical, hands-on activities that help pupils understand mathematical relationships rather than simply memorising procedures.

Pupils also explore measurement, geometry and simple statistics, applying their learning in meaningful contexts. Throughout, we place a strong emphasis on mathematical vocabulary, reasoning and problem-solving, enabling pupils to explain their thinking clearly and approach challenges with confidence.

English
In Year 1, we focus on developing phonics using the Read Write Inc. programme to build strong reading and writing foundations. By Year 2, pupils explore key texts, develop fluency, and begin to focus on spelling patterns and common exception words.

Science
Science is integrated into our IDL approach, enabling pupils to investigate and discover the world through exciting, hands-on experiences that link to other subjects.

Foundation Subjects
The following seven foundation subjects are also taught through the IDL framework:

  • Geography
  • History
  • Design Technology (DT)
  • Art
  • Music
  • Physical Education (PE)
  • Computing

In addition to Music and Physical Education being delivered by subject specialists, pupils from Year 1 are introduced to both French and Arabic, taught by dedicated language teachers. This specialist provision ensures high-quality subject expertise and supports strong foundations in language learning from an early stage. By immersing pupils in language-rich environments, we foster confidence, cultural awareness and a genuine enjoyment of communication.


To reflect our context in the Middle East, Arabic is taught from Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and continues throughout the Primary School.

Key Stage 2 (Years 3 to 6)

At Doha College, the Interdisciplinary Learning (IDL) approach established in Key Stage 1 continues throughout Key Stage 2, offering a dynamic and connected learning experience across all core and foundation subjects.

For example, if a Year 3 class is exploring the Stone Age, their English texts will reflect this theme — enabling pupils to immerse themselves fully in the topic and build deeper understanding. Themes such as the rainforest, space, sound, and Vikings serve as exciting backdrops for meaningful cross-curricular learning.

Pupils are encouraged to take ownership of their learning, with teachers creating opportunities for children to pursue their interests within each topic.


Core Subjects

Mathematics
Mathematics in Key Stage 2 is taught through a mastery approach, which means we do not group by ability. Instead, all children are given access to the curriculum at the appropriate level for their age, with differentiation happening in real time based on how each child engages with the learning during a lesson.
We’ve invested significantly in high-quality maths resources, which support conceptual understanding and problem-solving. Each lesson offers opportunities for pupils to think deeply, challenge themselves, and apply mathematical knowledge in varied contexts.
 

Languages
Arabic continues throughout Key Stage 2 and is delivered by specialist teachers, with classes grouped according to native and non-native speakers.
French is introduced in Year 3, initially taught by the class teacher and then taken over by a specialist French teacher from Years 4 to 6. This layered approach ensures strong progression in language learning.
