The 2025 edition of the Doha College Medical Conference saw an array of thought-provoking presentations, with students tackling some of the most pressing issues in modern medicine. The winning presentations highlighted pioneering research and ethical debates, demonstrating the depth of knowledge and intellectual curiosity among Doha College students.

First Place: Mary K and Adithi K

Title: Revitalising the Brain: Activating Dormant Neural Stem Cells

Mary and Adithi’s presentation delved into an exciting discovery from 2024—how dormant neural stem cells can be reactivated to differentiate into other neural cells. This groundbreaking mechanism has the potential to revolutionize treatments for neurodevelopmental disorders, neurodegenerative diseases, and brain injuries. Their research highlighted the far-reaching implications for neurology and the future of brain health, leaving the audience inspired by the possibilities that lie ahead.

Second Place: Precious A

Title: Deep Brain Stimulation: A Debate on Medical Ethics

Precious A tackled the ethical dilemmas surrounding deep brain stimulation (DBS), a revolutionary treatment for neurological and psychiatric conditions. While DBS offers hope for many, it also raises concerns about unintended personality changes. Precious navigated this complex topic with a compelling discussion on medical ethics, patient autonomy, and the future of neurotechnology.

Third Place: Reja B, Salma E, and Keara R

Title: The Gut’s Secret Weapon: Probiotics in the Battle Against C. Diff

Reja, Salma, and Keara explored the role of probiotics in combating Clostridioides difficile infections, a major challenge in healthcare settings. Their presentation covered the gut microbiome’s intricate balance, the damage caused by C. diff, and how probiotics restore harmony. They also examined cutting-edge treatments like Fecal Matter Transfer (FMT) and the long-term impact of gut health on disease prevention. Their insightful discussion underscored the power of microbiology in shaping modern medicine.
