Our Head of Primary to embark on exciting new Headship in Romania
Cristina Ionascu

Doha College has announced the exciting career progression of Grant Gillies, their Senior Vice Principal – Head of Primary. Grant has been appointed as Headmaster at the British School of Bucharest (BSB) from August 2021, a high-profile co-educational COBIS school for students aged 2 to 18.

Currently in its 20th year and with just over 600 students on roll, BSB has grown steadily both in numbers and stature, so much so that it is now one of the best-achieving British International Schools in Europe, both in the way of public examination successes and English National Curriculum levels of attainment.

Principal of Doha College, Dr Steffen Sommer shared his congratulations on the new appointment:

While I am deeply saddened that Grant will be leaving us, I am delighted for him, for it is the natural next step in his career. It is also a great success for Doha College as it is not easy to move from the position of Head of Primary to a Principalship of a well-established British International School. I wish him every success and with Grant at the helm, I am confident that the BSB will continue on this trajectory and climb further heights in the years to come. I am perpetually grateful to Grant for his unfailing dedication to Doha College and the significant contributions he has made during some of the most challenging times.

Arriving at Doha College in 2018 from a reputable Nord Anglia school in Thailand, Grant has expertly led the merger of two Primary schools, and the transition to a new state-of-the-art campus in the way of uniting staff and students, not to mention his contributions to the workings of the Leadership Group.

Grant said about his new position:

I am really looking forward to joining the British School of Bucharest as Headmaster in August 2021. It is a very exciting role, and the school is very similar to Doha College in many respects. Both schools are not-for-profit organisations and accredited COBIS training schools, offering the very best British education with exceptional exam results and student achievement. Assuming the position from Philip Walters is a real privilege and one which I am thoroughly looking forward to. He has grown BSB to the school it is today, and I look forward to building on the success he and his terrific team have achieved. It is with an incredibly heavy heart that I will leave Doha College. As one of the largest and most successful British international schools in the world, I was fortunate enough to be given a platform to build on my experiences, following Headships in Thailand and the UK, it has been a remarkable learning journey. The experiences and positive mindset towards personal development at the College is second to none and has been pivotal in my career progression, springboarding me to this opportunity with BSB. On a personal note, I am eternally grateful to Dr Steffen Sommer for his infallible trust and mentorship, the support and teamwork at Doha College is testament to his leadership.

The search for a suitable successor for the position of Senior Vice Principal - Head of Primary at Doha College will start immediately. In light of the international standing of Doha College as a High-Performance-Learning school within COBIS and HMC, and the fine reputation of the Primary School within IAPS, it is confident that the position will attract a very strong field when it goes to the international market in the next few days.
