Celebrating Neurodiversity and Disability Awareness at Doha College
Doha College proudly observed Neurodiversity and Disability Awareness Week, joining the global community in marking International Neurodiversity Celebration Week. Under this year’s inspiring theme, “Celebrating Our Unique Strengths and Differences,” our entire school community came together to explore the importance of embracing cognitive and physical diversity. The week’s activities were thoughtfully organised by our Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Committee, whose work continues to promote a culture of awareness, empathy, and inclusion across the school.
Throughout the week, students across both Primary and Secondary took part in a series of engaging and educational activities designed to foster empathy, challenge stereotypes, and promote deeper understanding. In the Primary phase, our Deputy Heads led inclusive assemblies that encouraged pupils to recognise how every brain works differently, sparking meaningful conversations around the richness of cognitive diversity.
In the Secondary school, our Year 10 DEI (Diversity, Equity and Inclusion) Representatives took the lead, delivering impactful assemblies that addressed common misconceptions and introduced students to the Medical and Social Models of Disability. Their leadership and insight were a powerful example of student voice in action.
Beyond assemblies, pupils engaged in a variety of interactive workshops and classroom discussions. They explored alternative communication methods, learnt the basics of British Sign Language (BSL), and participated in Minds of All Kinds – a thought-provoking activity that invited them to reflect on how individual thinking styles shape our perspectives and experiences. These initiatives not only enhanced awareness but also reinforced our values as a school committed to inclusion.
At Doha College, we are committed to raising awareness on bias and discrimination while promoting equal opportunities and nurturing positive relationships within our diverse community. We value the unique contributions of every student, staff member, parent, and partner. Our ongoing DEI work ensures that every member of our school feels seen, heard, and supported — not just during themed weeks, but every day.
Neurodiversity and Disability Awareness Week was a meaningful reminder that diversity in thinking, learning, and experiencing the world is something to be understood and celebrated.
