Study at Doha College

Doha College is mildly selective on academic ability, English and mathematics is certainly required. Without this, students would not benefit from the curriculum offered as the medium of instruction is English.

In Key Stage 3, (years 7, 8 and 9, American Grade 6 to 8), students study a wide range of subjects before making decisions on where their interests and talents lie. The Department for Education and Employment (DfEE) guidelines are followed where possible to ensure that standards are in line with mainstream UK schools.

In addition to the core subjects of:

Mathematics English Science

students also study:

Information TechnologyDesign and Technology FrenchArt Drama Geography History Music Physical Education

At the end of year 9, students have some choice in the subjects they wish to study to GCSE level in years 10 and 11 (14 to 16 years old, American Grade 9 and 10). The core subjects of mathematics, English and science are supplemented by optional GCSE’s so that on average nine subjects are taken.

We are keen to benchmark our performance by comparisons with other schools. The GCSE and A level grades provide one source of information, but we also look at standardised examinations at other times throughout a student’s education to gauge the ‘value added’ factor that the College provides. There are several areas of development during the schooling of young people which cannot be given a precise numerical value, such as social interaction, environmental awareness, leadership qualities, etc.

The College aims to provide a ‘broad and balanced’ curriculum, achieved through a carefully designed taught curriculum. In addition, there are numerous opportunities for students to broaden their experience through extra curricular activities.

There is a wide range of these on offer. Sporting activities are well attended and feature basketball, cricket, swimming, football, etc. For some students the appeal of learning more about computers, the Internet and graphic design is more interesting, while others prefer golf or sailing. The range of activities on offer will vary from year to year and even within the term.

Students at the College can become involved in theatrical and musical productions at the Doha Players Theatre. The involvement can be either on-stage or behind the scenes preparing scenery, make-up, sound, lighting and a whole host of other tasks.

Most activities are free of charge, although for some, such as sailing and golf, an additional charge is levied.
