| Year 7 football trip to Dubai | Dubai College Sports Exchange 2006 |
Doha College International Schools Football Competition 2006 - Year 7 Girls |
The Qatar Inter- School Annual Football Tournament 2006 |
On the 1st and 2nd of March fourteen students went to Dubai to play football for Doha College accompanied by Mr. Phillips and Mr. Hillman. We departed on Wednesday morning. Later during that day the students along with the teachers enjoyed a long day at the Wild Wadi Water Park! At the end of such an exciting but exhausting day the students met their host families from Dubai College.
The following day everyone was excited for the tournament to start, with all the top schools in Dubai competing. During the day, four great matches were played by Doha College in the tournament. After winning the first game 5-0 against Horizon School, the team was confident of doing well. After hitting the crossbar twice against JESS it proved that one mistake is the difference between a semi final spot or not. JESS took a 1-0 lead from a big offside that wasn’t spotted and from then on it was obvious it was going to be one of those games as Doha College had numerous shots saved off the line. In the following two games, Doha College drew 1-1 with Jumeirah College and then 5-0 against English College. At the end of the overall standings Doha College came in seventh place which was very disappointing since we played so well but we all had fun as well as the pleasure of participating which was the main thing.
After the tournament we left to the airport and boarded the plane, sad to leave, but also happy to come back home.
By Martin Davidson, Year 7
As I have said before this was an awesome trip and the pupils were outstanding in every way. We always have a disadvantage when we play away as our traveling team is much smaller than that of out hosts however the senior girls won three of their sports and just missed out on the volleyball! All the other teams had wins of their own as well as some very close games. Well done to all teams and thank you to everyone who coached and supported this event!
Team reports as written by the team captains.
We had very tough matches while we were on the Dubai Exchange. In every sport we had a hard game and we gave them everything we had. We came out with one win, which was basketball, which is our strongest sport. We deserved to win the basketball as we have trained really hard and I am very pleased we won. Even though we lost in the other sports we tried our hardest and now we have the experience of playing against a strong team. We all had an enjoyable social time too. Overall the trip was superb.

Football - By Rachel Harston.
The junior girls were all a bit nervous, as football was the first sport of the tournament. Dubai College beat us 7-0 but we all worked extremely hard and we put all our effort into the match. All of the players in our team were star players but Christie Michael (9P) stood out and saved some amazing shots. Well done girls!!!
Netball - By Jessica Hutton
The girls of the netball team played their hearts out against the well-trained Dubai College. We played to the best of our ability but unfortunately we lost. Netball was the last sport of the tournament and I think the girls were worn out but gave it their best shot!
Softball - By Chloe Marsh
The match was very tight and we came very close to winning. In one of the sections when Dubai was batting we managed to get three people out without them getting any runs. I think that overall if we had a bit more experience playing against other teams then we would have won because we had a good squad and we had the potential to win the softball.
Basketball - By Eleanor Summers
The basketball match against Dubai College was an excellent game, and our team was pushed along by the never-ending support from the rest of the team screaming from the sidelines (thanks guys). We began with a brilliant start, scoring the first basket, and the final score was 22-9 to us. I just want to congratulate our team as they put in so much effort and achieved something great.
Water polo By Samantha Nepia
The water polo was extremely tough as we had just played one of our hardest games shortly before. We were all short of breath, our hearts beating vigorously against our chest, anxious to begin our next game. Every one of us played our hardest; each determined to win back what we had already lost. Rachel Harston and Lauren Bolton played their best and worked brilliantly together to score three goals. All of the girls played exceptionally well and even though the battle was lost, the game itself helped each of us to realize our full potential.
Junior Boys
By Daniel Zanin Junior Boys captain
During the whole trip we were gave every sport our full effort. We managed to play well as a team throughout and could have beaten the Dubai junior boys team in more sports had we not been so tired by the end of the day. We were all very happy with our win at water polo but also disappointed that we lost in the other competitions. Overall we played our best and congratulations to all the team who took part.
Rugby - By Adam Williams.
7 a-side rugby was the junior boys first event and we had an early 8:30 kick off. We had the disadvantage of being the much lesser experienced team but we were determined to perform to the best of our abilities. The first five minutes was quite evenly matched but then Dubai made a break down the wing to score the first try. We weren’t going to let the game slip that easily and fought back, our hard work being rewarded shortly after when our left wing, Daniel Cilliers broke through a tackle to score our first try and the second of the game. Dubai’s experience and organization began to show and they grabbed two more converted tries before half time. Dubai went on the offensive straight from the start of the second half and although we defended desperately our efforts were not enough to stop Dubai from scoring two more tries one of these being converted. Final score Dubai 33 Doha 5.
Basketball -By Adam Williams
The junior boys second sport was basketball and we were feeling quite
confident. Dubai started off strongly scoring 3 quick baskets but then as
our nerves settled we began to play a lot better and we scored a few baskets
of our own. The game was pretty evenly matched all the way through the first
half but Dubai had the lead through the quick baskets they had scored at the
beginning of the match. Both teams played tough defence in the second half
and few baskets were scored. The game finished at Dubai 16 Doha 10.
Football - By Jordan Gammie.
This was Doha College’s last match of the Dubai exchange. We had won one out of five sports in which we participated in and this was the one in which we were hoping to win. It was always going to be difficult against a team with a larger pool of players to pick from, than the travelling Doha team.
Doha College got of to an outstanding start when Luke passed a fantastic ball down the wing to Luka who caught the defence sleeping but was unfortunately ruled offside. Dubai College then had a break through when they took a shot and the ball was cleared well by Leo. Dubai College then shot again only for Tim to tip the thunderous strike onto the crossbar which was then gathered up. Dubai couldn’t hold Doha for much longer when Mitchell made a run down the centre of the park, passed it to Mark who made a great pass to Luke who then crossed the ball over to Jordan who took a thundering shot only for the ball to go past the far post. Doha College let a few easy balls through the defence which they had to rely on their keeper Tim who played outstanding and kept Doha in the first half of the game. After a fantastic clearance by Daniel the half time whistle blew with a fair result of 0-0.
Dubai College got of to a great start in the second half when their left midfielder made a lightening fast run down the wing, crossed the ball over to there forward player who caught the ball on a volley, which was tipped over the bar by Tim. Another chance then fell to Leo, when a corner taken by Luke flew over all the players, which he took first time with his left foot, with the ball heading over the line a scramble by the defenders stopped it inches from going over, and the keeper retrieved it. Ten minutes from the end of the match, Dubai made a great run down the wing, took a blistering shot from the 18 yard box into the top corner. Dubai was looking to double their lead when the striker made a run into the box and thundered the ball towards the bottom corner. Thankfully, a fantastic save from Tim prevented any increase in the score. The full time whistle was blown with a final score of 1-0 to the home side.
Doha College put up a great fight, producing some good clean competitive football. In the end there can only be one winner and I guess this time it was Dubai College who was victorious.
Water Polo - By Daniel Zanin
Going into the pool we felt water polo was our strongest sport and having lost all the other sports we really wanted to win this. We started off attacking inconsistently and our teamwork was poor. During the 1st quarter we went down 2 – 0. It wasn’t until the 2nd quarter we started playing as a team and playing some good water polo and subsequently managed to get within 1 goal of Dubai College. In the 3rd quarter were at our best and we scored and drew even with Dubai. In the final quarter we finally took the lead for the first time in the game. One player on our team got sin-binned but we managed to keep the score at 3 – 2 to us until the final whistle. Where were all extremely happy that we finally managed to win against Dubai College.
Senior Boys
The senior Boys gave everything they had in every game played, and giving the home side a tough job. When we played as a team in all the sports we easily dominated, even though Dubai had the advantage of fresh players we kept playing hard. Despite our size we were a much more physical team, proving to be useful in water polo and football where we played our best. Congratulations to all the team for playing the best when we needed.
Water polo: Luca Zanin
As this was our first match the team were all excited and ready to play, unfortunately we did not start as we would have liked too. After being 3-0 down after half time, and having missed several close opportunities. We then came back to dominate the game despite their size advantage to finish 4-3 down after the 3rd quarter. Finally after attacking all out in the last quarter we lost a close game 5-4.
Softball: Cevan Sneddon
Doha was slow to start and allowed Dubai to gain an early advantage of about 7 runs. Our batting wasn’t up to scratch with several people striking out.
It was only near the end of the second inning, which we real got our bearings, getting our outs quickly and preventing few runs from being completed.
From then on we dominated, everyone was hitting consistently but we were still unable to gain any runs. With a change in positions we then only conceded 1 run and gained one run to finish 10-3 down.
Volleyball: Daniel Powell
This was the only game, which we won on the weekend, but we did it quickly and easily, winning in straight sets 21-18 and 21-17. There was a huge height disadvantage but we were able to cover the court properly and still be able to counter attack winning a lot of points to seal the win.
Football: Daniel Powell
The sport that we were all looking forward to. After a good night, we arrived feeling confident and prepared. Again we stared of slow and conceded a goal just before half time under the blistering heat. The 2nd half however was a different game, with Doha controlling play and making most of the attacks. There were still some close calls and the ball being cleared off the line and some near misses by our attacks. A mistake by Dubai let us pick up an equalizer. Unfortunately we missed a few chances at the end of the game to win.
Basketball: Rommel Pottiger
The match was fought hard, the scores were close, and being the last event to be played everyone was exhausted, but enjoying ever part of the weekend. The senior team played hard throughout the game, as did Dubai: however the match resulted in a 21-25 loss, which we could have easily won.
Senior Girls Team
Faye Dunlop
This year the senior girl’s team did very well away against Dubai College. The senior girl’s team won three out of the six events. This was a massive improvement on last year’s performance. All of the girls played outstanding in all events and deserved to win more events than they actually did.
Volleyball
All the girls played extremely well in the volleyball. This was our first event so everyone was a little nervous. We played the best out of three matches. We won the first match and played some excellent 3-touch volleyball. We lost the second two matches, which lost us the game. However the girls played really well throughout.
Basketball
We won this match 16-9. We were ahead throughout the match. The defensive play in the game was outstanding and all the girls played to the best they possibly could. I think that we really deserved the win. Special commendations go to Emma Trapski for some excellent shooting.
Water polo
We lost the water polo 3-2. We were in the lead 3-1 until the last 5 minutes of the game. I think that we got tired and the girls lost their concentration. However I think that we were the better team and were unlucky not to hold onto the draw. Well done to all the girls that took part.
Football
We won the football 2-1. I feel this was an absolutely amazing game and the standard of girls school football was outstanding and of the highest level. Dubai College scored in the first 10 minutes of the game giving them the lead early on. This made us have o work hard to attack their goal and keep possession. In the second half we were the much better team, we scored through an excellent goal from outside the box by Faye Dunlop. The girls continued to battle on and worked hard which resulted in a second goal by Faye which was set up by a looping pass from Rachael Dunlop. In the last few minutes of the game Emma Trapski made an excellent save to give Doha College the win. All of the girls deserve commendations for the way they played throughout the match.
Netball
We lost the netball to Dubai College. However all the girls played extremely well. We managed to score 11 goals, which has never been done before. In the first quarter the game was very close, however after this Dubai took advantage of some sloppy passes to gain the win.
Softball
Softball 9 Doha College – 6 Dubai College. The fielding throughout the game was very good and there were some excellent catches and great throws. The girls really did deserve the win.

Report - Doha College International Schools Football Competition 2006 -
Year 7 Girls
A football tournament was held at Doha rugby club on the 15th of March Doha College the home team organised all the teams in Qatar to come and compete against each other.
Most of the immensely educated schools in Doha gathered at the Doha Rugby Club to witness one of the schools best and only girls’ football tournament of the year. It is a league of four teams Qatar International School, Park House, Al-Jazz-era and Doha College. There was a large amount of different nationalities in which showed up to make it a fun and challenging tournament.
Our first match was against Al jazz-era and we didn’t have a goalkeeper we had to select really quickly. We picked a girl called Marlie, which was really brave of her. Our defense wasn’t really sticking in well and we had never played together. Just before half time one of al jazz-eras players kicked it over and the player ran onto the ball and shot for the goal. It went through the side net but the referee didn’t see it. There was 5 minutes left of the game and the defender kicked it up the field and shot another goal Marlie just tipped it away then one of the players hit it in. 3 minutes left of the game Ariana kicked the ball up the field to Stephanie and she crossed it into the box to charlotte. Charlotte had a shot from outside the box right into top corner which made it 2-1. The last minute of the game Marlie kicked the ball up the field up to charlotte. She took the defenders on and a midfielder slid her. The referee didn’t give us a penalty so al jazz-era kicked the ball out and the whistle blew.
Our 2nd game was against park house. We took centre and straight away we passed it to Ciara and she hit it over all the players out wide to Stephanie. Stephanie passed it into the box to charlotte and charlotte took a shot and went right into bottom corner. We had three goals the same scored by charlotte, which made her a hatric hero. Just a half time park house scored but it was impossible to save it. Then we took centre and hit it back to Malak which passed to Stephanie she ran up the wing and crossed it in to Ariana she a shot and deflected so Ciara took the ball and hit it into top corner. Park house took centre again and we ran into them straight away and tackled them charlotte was in the box and got pushed over which made it a penalty. She hit the ball into the centre and the goalie fumbled it. The end score 6-1.
Our 3rd game was against the hardest team Q.I.S. Q.I.S took centre and we ran to them but there was a girl with no shoes on so she had to be taken off. While she was off it was already 1-o to Doha College and she started to shout at her team. We just kept run over them it was never on our side. They changed their goalkeeper 4 times and the referee was getting really mad. Charlotte took a shot from the half way line and slipped and just touché the ball and it hit the inside of the post. Ciara then came up and took a shot in bottom corner. The captain was getting really annoyed with us so she hit Stephanie in the face. Charlotte took the free kick and Ciara hit it in. Ciara scored 3 goals and charlotte scored 5 which made it 8-1 at full time.
Over all Doha college year 7 girls came 2nd and Doha college year 8 came 3rd we all enjoyed ourselves and we thank Mr. Phillips and Mr. Froud for organizing it and all the teams who took part - thanks.
The Qatar Inter- School Annual Football Tournament 2006
On Wednesday 15th, Doha College Year 10 team joined with Al Khor, Gulf English, Al Jazeera, Park house and Dukhan schools to make an enjoyable day of ladies football. Not only did we play football but we socialised with new people and made some new friends and for some people reacquainted with old ones.
The standard of football was very high and the games we played were very competitive yet enjoyable. Fortunately there were no serious injuries and everyone was very friendly towards each other which made the whole experience even better. Overall the Year 10 Doha College team played exceptionally well as they were undefeated in all of their games and showed great sportsmanship to every team.
Our first match was against the Gulf English School and we were quite nervous as we had never trained properly as a team before. However our nerves soon went away as Alison Pitts scored the first goal which opened the game right up. We were attacking very well and the defence were doing a great job of getting the ball to the attackers. Rachael Dunlop then scored the second goal which sealed the match to a 2-0 victory.
After a 30 minute break we then went into our second match of the day. We were not as nervous as we were before as we knew that we had the potential to win the game. It was a fairly even game with the ball being kicked to each side of the pitch. Aisha Doyle and Nour Deeb made a great defence as they were eager to tackle the opposition. About halfway through the game, an Al Jazeera player did a handball in the box allowing us to take our first penalty. Rachael Dunlop placed it in the right hand side of the goal which gave us the lead. About 5 minutes later another penalty was awarded for handball and Rachael hit it into the bottom left of the goal. Finally result 2-0.
Our next game was against Dukhan and it was a comfortable 4-1 win. It mostly in their half for the game however the defense did have a small job to do. Milena and Megan both scored their first goals of the tournament and put us into a 2-0 lead. Rachael then scored the third goal and Alison Pitts finished with a superb hit into the left hand side of the goal. Dukhan made a surprising comeback with a small lapse in the defence leading them to score their only goal in the match.
Our final game was against Park House School and Megan scored the first goal by placing it in the bottom right hand corner of the goal………
