6th Form
Education at Doha College

Message from
the Head of
6th Form
In the 21st century, it will be crucial for our students to develop a
capacity to go on learning throughout their lives. Here at the Doha College,
our commitment is to both raise educational standards and to create an
environment where every student can enjoy learning and achieve their
potential. We believe that all our students are capable of attaining high
standards and should leave school with the knowledge, qualifications and
life skills that enable them to play their full part in society.
Every student who attends Doha College experiences an environment which is
safe and conducive to learning, where they enjoy being taught and the
quality of teaching is excellent. Our students are highly motivated, self
disciplined, respectful and caring of others. They also frequently take the
initiative and extend their learning beyond what is taught in the classroom.
In this way they are model students within the community.
Our system is designed to give students friendly support and professional
guidance throughout their time here. They get to know their personal tutor
in the first few days and become a member of a tutor group which meets
regularly. Here they will make new friends and explore all kinds of topics
such as personal career ambitions, health matters, study skills and current
world issues. Each term we arrange for students to talk about their
progress, first with their subject teachers and then with their tutor. In
this way, their tutor comes to know them better and is well placed to give
advice on study or personal problems should they arise.
This year we have appointed Mr Joshua Brooks who is a Careers
and University Guidance Counsellor. He will be available to support
students through the next stage of their educational career. Mr Brooks, as
well as making individual appointments, has arranged a series of twilight
sessions to support this process. Students are encouraged to attend these
sessions; parents are also invited to attend. Details and dates can be found
on the Careers page of the E-learning platform.
I look forward to another successful year the 6th form marked by the high
aspirations of our students and the celebration of individual as well as
collective achievement.
Mr.
Douglas Briggs

College Life at Post-16
Advice from:
(Head Girl) Mary Lynch and
Yan-Christian Loetzer (Head Boy),
2007-08
Year 12
was by far our most exciting, dynamic, daunting, energetic, frightful, tensing,
enjoyable and discoverable year in Doha College.
It was
exciting because everything was new; the subjects we took, the
teachers we had and even the atmosphere around us. We vividly remember how
dynamic and energetic the first few weeks of year 12 were, when we were all
busy solidifying our first impressions with peers and teachers. One of the first
things we noticed was how much we were treated differently by the school.
Starting over was a big obstacle we had to overcome.
Many
opportunities came to us while I was in Year 12. Nominations and interviews for
Head Boy and Head Girl, the International Award, Model United Nations to name a
few. We are where we are right now because of what we did and achieved last
year.
While all these
things were exciting, they were also daunting at the same time. At the
end of it all, the good outweighed the bad and we gained a lot of experience at
the end of the year. But it didn’t come easy. It took perseverance,
hard work and commitment in order for us to reap the benefits that
Post 16 offered.
We would like
to give one piece of advice for parents to pass on to their children; KEEP
ORGANISED. We can’t
stress this enough. Yes, more is demanded of the students and yes, the work is
much more difficult. But there’s
one thing your children can control, and that is how prepared they are for both
the expectations and benefits of Post 16.
