The Victory Team

On Thursday 10th November 2005 the year 12 I.C.T. group went on a field trip to the Corniche. We were met by Moira from the Victory Team from Dubai who was our guide around the area.

We started by walking around and looking at all the different team trucks and the boats that were loaded on top of them. This allowed us to see all the different teams that were participating in the race. We also got to see the different ways the boats had been designed in order to represent the different countries but also the different engines that different boats used.

From there we got a talk from John, also from the Victory Team, who explained to us how the deck and other parts of the boat were made. He talked about how some of the materials used were very light and could be broken very easily if put one way but was so tough if it was put another way. This is because it had been created in order to reconstruct a honeycomb form.

Whilst half of the group were learning about the materials and structure of the boat, the other half of the team were inside one of the team’s vans looking at all the technology that was being used in order to allow other members of the teams to communicate with the driver and navigator during the race.

After this we got to climb on to one of the boats that had previously been damaged. We got to see where the driver and navigator were seated during the race and how they used the escape hatches incase of emergencies. We also got a quick glance at the engine which allowed us to see one of the three engines that are currently being used in races globally.

Nearer to the end of our trip we got to meet Sheikh Hassan one of the drivers of the Qatar team. We got refreshments in the Victory team’s dining area and finally we got to go to the media centre where we were introduced to John who talked us through the process of making the videos and news reports. Overall, we feel as a group that this was one of the best school trips the school has ever provided for us and a great first I.C.T. trip held.

We would like to thank Mr. Le Marchand and Mr. Fernandez for giving us the opportunity to experience this.
