Trip to Powerboat Racing Tournament

By Saud Al-Thani

On Thursday 10th November we went to the powerboat racing tournament as part of our study on the extent of ICT usage in today’s society. We got an exclusive ‘behind the scenes’ look on how the members of the Victory Team work and prepares for the races. We found out many interesting things, and were surprised by how much ICT had impacted the way they do things. The tour began by Moira showing us the boats, and after that we split into two groups.

My group first saw the components of the boat and how they are able to make it strong but light. We then went into a telemetry room where we saw how real time information could be sent from the powerboats to the machines. We learnt how the data obtained could help in future designs, for example possible improvements to minimize crash damage. We then were shown the inside of the powerboats and all the ICT related gadgets they use for communication. Finally we explored the media coverage center and were shown the techniques used in creating the footage that are put on TV.

Many thanks go to Moira and Mr Le Marchand; the trip couldn’t have been organized or made without you!
