Course Synopsis:

Geography offers the opportunity to study a broad spectrum of topics from learning about the most powerful forces on earth to the economic struggles of countries. The world we live in is likely to change more in the next 50 years than it has ever done before. Geography explains why this is and helps to prepare you for those changes.
Geography tackles the big issues such as environmental responsibility, natural hazards, LEDC and MEDC economies and global interdependence. It teaches this through debates, film, games, fieldwork and independent research.
By studying Geography you will develop a range of skills and knowledge base that is highly valued by universities and employers. The transferable skills which Geography fosters are an asset in the complex world of employment today.
As Geography teaches you a wide range of skills it enables you to keep your options open, as it is useful for a very wide range of exciting jobs. Jobs include meteorology, architecture, tourism, management and administration, the financial sector, retail and media etc.


Year 12 students will have the opportunity to take part in a 6 day residential fieldtrip to either the UK or Cyprus.

Unit 1: Physical Environments

 

Flooding is the world’s costliest hazard, killing and causing horrendous damage in LEDCs and MEDCs.   We study. 

How floods can change the physical environment and damage economies especially in LEDC’s

The landforms created by fluvial processes.

With rapidly rising sea levels, how can we cope with this inevitable, unstoppable invasion?

Examining how glaciers have produced most of the earth’s surface we see today.

Unit 3: Physical Systems,

 

The atmosphere and the crust we live on are issues that are rarely out of the news.  We study.

The dynamic atmosphere.  How and why are we destroying it and therefore ourselves? 

How plate tectonics, earthquakes, volcanoes and tsunamis effect the human environment and physical environment.

 

Human Environments

 

With the world population at 6.6 billion and increasing at a rate of 10 people per second this is an import issue. 

We study how population

 Characteristics vary, spatially, over time and the implications these have on socio-economic groups and the environment.

The different types of energy and the geopolitics of its supply and demand. 

The environmental impact of energy production and the need for sustainable energy supply and consumption.

Human Systems

 

The number of million cities has increased from 24 to over 200 in 60 years.  We study:

Investigation into how economic activity varies, employment structures change, and the impact of globalisation and involvement of governments is increasing.

Studying the concept of the North/South divide and the social, economic and environmental impacts of multi-national companies on their host countries.

Unit 2: Geographical Skills

Field visit

 

During Year 12 geography you will go on a 5 day residential to either Cyprus or England.  During the visit you will develop a wide variety of geographical skills There is no coursework component after the field trip.

Unit 4: Geographical Issues

 

 

This unit tests your understanding of the relationships between human and physical environments. The pre-released material allows students to view the topic before the examination.

 Course requirement is a B grade in Geography at GCSE
