Course Synopsis:
The Modern Foreign Language courses
at AS and A2 Level are challenging but highly rewarding. The course
encourages you to communicate confidently and accurately in the foreign
language through the spoken and written word, to develop critical
insights into the contemporary society and cultural background of the
countries where the foreign language is spoken and to increase your
sensitivity to language and language learning. As well as providing a
suitable foundation for further study and/or practical use of the
foreign language, the courses also offer you a satisfying and worthwhile
learning experience. Through the study of Modern Foreign Languages at AS
and A2 level, you will develop your skills in communicating, in working
with others, in information technology and in improving your own
learning and performance.
Syllabus Summary
Year 12 – AS Level (Edexcel)
Year 13 – A2 Level (Edexcel)
Section A: Answering
questions in the TL on a stimulus relating to a chosen general
topic area.
Section B:
Discussion on the same general topic area and its linked
subtopics in the TL.
TL
= Target language
Discussion on a chosen issue with a spontaneous discussion of at
least two further unpredictable areas of discussion in the TL. Unit
2–Understanding and Written Response 35%
Section B:
Retrieving and conveying information by reading authentic
printed materials in the TL and responding in English and in the
TL.
Section C: Writing
200-220 words in the form of a letter, report or article in the
TL based on a short TL stimulus.
Section A: A short
written translation from English into the TL.
Section B: A TL
essay in response to one from a choice of seven questions that
invite either discursive or creative writing.
Section C: A
research based essay in the TL (240-270 words) linked to an area
of personal interest, related to the culture and / or society of
the TL country, countries or community.
Entry Requirements:
The minimum grade for entry is B at GCSE level
Unit 1- Spoken Expression and Response 15%
Unit 3- Understanding and Spoken Response 17.5%
Section A: Listening to a
range of authentic recorded TL material and retrieving
information by responding to an array of TL questions.
Unit 4- Research, Understanding and Written Response 32.5%
