Chemistry – Advanced Subsidiary GCE and Advanced GCE
< Back
Course Synopsis:
This specification enables contemporary chemistry contexts to be included
with the teaching and learning programme. It is designed to be motivating to
both teachers and students by encouraging more students to study chemistry
and encouraging teachers to update the content that they deliver.
Students will study different aspects of chemistry that are often in the
media, and that affect their lives. It is important that students have the
required knowledge and understanding of the fundamental chemistry concepts
in order to explain many different aspects of contemporary chemistry, such
as climate change, green chemistry, pharmaceuticals and chemistry research.
This Chemistry specification has been developed to meet the new QCA
requirements but draws on the strengths and experience of the current
Edexcel Chemistry and Nuffield specifications.
The specification aims to:
·
stimulate
and sustain students’ interest in and enjoyment of Chemistry
·
enable
students to gain a knowledge and understanding of Chemistry appropriate to
these levels and to appreciate the interlinking patterns which are a
distinguishing feature of the subject
·
show the
interrelationship between the development of the subject and its application
(social, economic, environmental and technological) and recognise the value
of Chemistry to society and how it may be used responsibly
·
foster
imaginative and critical thinking as well as the acquisition of knowledge,
together with an appreciation of the intellectual discipline which the
subject provides
·
provide
opportunities for students to bring together knowledge of how different
areas of Chemistry relate to each other
·
aid
awareness of how advances in information technology and instrumentation are
used in Chemistry provide an appropriate course for those who will end their
study of the subject at one of these stages as well as laying a secure
foundation for those who will continue their studies in this or related
subjects.
