General Information

The College was set up in 1980, to meet the needs of the British expatriate community here in Qatar. It has since grown into a school of 700+ students representing over 50 nationalities. The College curriculum is based on the National Curriculum for England and Wales.
Since the College was set up there have been, and continue to be, additions and improvements to the facilities. The latest of which are a purpose built sports hall, heated swimming pool, a purpose built music block and an extension to the sixth form centre, including a business studies suite.

Other facilities include:

  • Eight fully equipped science laboratories with prep rooms.
  • Five networked computer suites with industry standard PC’s.
  • Purpose built technology block hosting design and technology, art and information technology.
  • Drama Studio.
  • Library and learning resource centre.
  • Internet access from all computers.
  • All weather astroturf sports field with access to grassed pitch.

All buildings are fully air-conditioned, a 'must' as Summer temperatures in Qatar can be in excess of 50C.

The College is committed to promoting the highest academic standards and enjoys an excellent reputation. Although the admission procedure for the College is mildly selective, there is still a wide ability range and it is an indication of the dedication and team work of staff and students that excellent examination results are achieved, significantly above the UK average figures.

In Key Stage 3, (years 7, 8 and 9, American Grade 6 to 8), students study a wide range of subjects before making decisions on where their interests and talents lie. The Department for Education and Employment (DfEE) guidelines are followed where possible to ensure that standards are in line with mainstream UK schools.

In addition to the core subjects of:
Mathematics English Science

students also study:
Information TechnologyDesign and Technology FrenchArt Drama Geography History Music Physical Education

At the end of year 9, students will have some choice in the subjects they wish to study to GCSE level in years 10 and 11 (14 to 16 years old, American Grade 9 and 10). The core subjects of mathematics, English and science are supplemented by optional GCSE’s so that on average nine subjects are taken.

We are keen to benchmark our performance by comparisons with other schools. The GCSE and A level grades provide one source of information, but we also look at standardised examinations at other times throughout a student’s education to gauge the ‘value added’ factor that the College provides. There are several areas of development during the schooling of young people which cannot be given a precise numerical value, such as social interaction, environmental awareness, leadership qualities, etc.

The College aims to provide a ‘broad and balanced’ curriculum, achieved through a carefully designed taught curriculum. In addition, there are numerous opportunities for students to broaden their experience through extra curricular activities.

There is a wide range of these on offer. Sporting activities are well attended and feature basketball, cricket, swimming, football and so on. For some students the appeal of learning more about computers, the Internet and graphic design is more interesting, while others prefer golf, horse riding, film club, scuba diving or sailing. The range of activities on offer varies from year to year.

Most activities are free of charge, although for some, such as golf an additional charge is levied.
