Dragon

The dragon is a legendary creature. In ancient days the dragon was regarded as a most sacred animal, and used to be the imperial emblem of Chinese emperors. It is the powerful yet gentle 'Loong' made up of different parts: a camels head, a carp's body, a snake's neck and a tiger's feet. Have you ever thought of yourself as a Dragon?

Well according to the Chinese Zodiac. If you were born in the years 1904, 1916, 1928, 1940, 1952, 1964, 1976, 1988 or 2000, then you were born in the year of the Dragon.

Dragons are passionate and softhearted, but somewhat stubborn, very healthy and energetic. The next year of the Dragon is 2022.

Griffin

The griffin is a legendary creature with the body of a lion and the head and often wings of an eagle. As the lion was traditionally considered the king of the beasts and the eagle was the king of the birds, the griffin was thought to be an especially powerful and majestic creature.

Phoenix

The phoenix is a mythical sacred firebird. With a 500 to 1,000 year life-cycle, near the end of which it builds itself a nest of myrrh twigs that then ignites; both nest and bird burn fiercely and are reduced to ashes, from which a new, young phoenix or phoenix egg arises, reborn anew to live again.

Salamander

The name salamander is applied to both a mythical and a real creature, the one inspired by the other. The name comes from the Greek for 'fire lizard'. The salamander was believed to be a creature of fire.

The level of its elemental association varied. Sometimes it was simply fire resistant or would put out fire, at other times it was said to live in fire, sometimes it was even said to be born in fire.

It has been said that salamanders were created when glass-blowers stoked their furnaces continually for seven days and nights.

Unicorn

The unicorn is the only fabulous beast that does not seem to have been conceived out of human fears. In even the earliest references, he is fierce yet good, selfless yet solitary, but always mysteriously beautiful. He could be captured only by unfair means.

So, a unicorn is a lot more than a horse with a horn sticking out of its head! It is a symbol throughout time of purity, devotion and loyalty. When Voldemort is rather nasty to unicorns, (see first Harry Potter book) he is condemned forever to live a sort of empty half-life devoid of proper feeling and happiness.

Unfortunately, most of Doha College houses have big, ugly beasts as their leaders. Unicorn is the only house to have something really good.
