Post 16 application calendar

 
 

Year 12 Sept – Dec

Non UK applicants take SAT I/II/TOEFL if leaving at the end of year 12.

Request your transcripts from the Careers and University Guidance Counsellor. These are official documents involving a collection of reports and grades from year 10 onwards to be sent to the universities you have applied to particularly in US and Canada. Transcripts have a small charge in order to prepare and send in sealed envelopes through the school or independently. Please allow at least two weeks for a transcript to be prepared.

Request letters of recommendations from two teachers, at least one related to the course you are going to study at university.

Attend university fairs/meetings with visiting representatives.

 

 
  Year 12 Jan – April

Attend university open days and higher education fairs.

If you have no idea what you wish to do, or just want to discuss your ideas, arrange to meet with your careers adviser.

You will need to check registration and exams for any exams relevant to your intended applications:

Check university websites as there may be other exams e.g. HAT the history aptitude test for entry to Oxford.

*If you plan to go to university following year 12 you need to complete this calendar in one year not two.

 
  Year 12 May – August


Begin to make a list of suitable courses and universities; you can apply for up to six courses in the UK and more in other countries. You need to check details on applying for your particular course for specific requirements e.g. medicine offer you four choices with two non medical.

Continue to attend university open days and higher education fairs. If you are visiting the country you intend to move to for higher education contact the universities you are interested in to arrange a visit over the summer.

AS Exams – May/June

Research sponsorships and scholarships; universities have information and links on their websites.

Discuss your academic progress with teachers before you break for the summer, this will enable you to identify any areas you need to work on.

Sit any exams you can over the summer e.g. SAT and TOEFL

AS Results – August, determine which subjects to continue onto A2 level, resit or drop.

 

 
  Year 13 September – December

Discuss any problems or queries about your choices and applications with your careers adviser as soon as possible this term.

Be aware of entry test closing dates. If you have not sat required entrance tests you need to register and sit them as soon as possible.

Complete your personal statement in your first few weeks of term.

Ask your teacher for a reference to be written for your UCAS application. If you are applying to Canada, US etc please request approximately two letters of recommendations; these can be copied for each institution.

Complete UCAS forms online; your school will provide you with codes to access the online application form. UCAS applications open 1 September, apply as soon as possible you will start getting replies early.

Closing dates:

        15 October            Medicine/dentistry/veterinary science/veterinary medicine and Oxbridge
        15 January            all other applications for UK and EU students


All applications other than UK please check opening and closing dates for your courses. US have general dates of 1 March but many institutions have individual dates for courses.

 

 
  Year 13 January – May

A2 modular exams and AS resits – January.

Meet deadlines set by individual universities for applications to USA, Canada and Germany etc in this term.

Complete initial enquiries for student funding from your Local Education Authority (LEA) if applying in UK as home student. Check dates for any other funding associated with your courses.

Continue to attend any university open days and higher education fairs.

When you have received all your replies from UCAS universities confirm your decisions on first and second choice places, then decline all others.

If you are not applying to UK ensure you have followed the application procedure on accepting places as explained on the individual university websites.

You will receive information on accommodation after accepting your conditional or unconditional place at university; check the deadline for applying.

Applications can refer through Extra for the first time – students without offers will be contacted with another application choice.
Universities should aim to give applicants decisions by 31 March

Late applications can still be made through UCAS but you must state why you are applying late on your personal statement; you application may not be considered until June.

A2/AS exams – May/June.
 
 
  Year 13 June – August

Ensure that you have confirmed your acceptance of universities.

30 June is the last date for applications for immediate consideration; any applications received after this date will be held for clearing.

6 July is the last date to apply through Extra in the UCAS system.

August A Level results arrive. Please refer to information provided on results day and clearing.
 
 
  Note:
• Make a copy of each completed application for your own records
• If universities have not notified you that all application materials have been received phone, fax or e-mail them for verification.
